NIA, the National Institutes of Health, is an association of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney diseases. In this study, the generic drugs valtrex and valaciclovir were used to treat common cold sore infection.
The researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, which included 9,906 people with CKD (acute kidney failure) and 10,838 people with kidney disease (CKD-free). The patients received oral steroids (500 mg for 10 days) and a generic drug valaciclovir (100 mg for 12 months). The study was stopped at week 6.
Results showed that the generic drug valaciclovir (100 mg for 12 months) was more effective than the branded drug valaciclovir (500 mg).
Patients who had had a kidney transplant were more likely to use the generic drug valaciclovir (25% versus 4%) than the branded drug valaciclovir (10% versus 3%) and valaciclovir (17% versus 6%) among patients with CKD or kidney disease.
The researchers found that the use of valaciclovir (50 mg for 12 months) was more effective than the branded drug valaciclovir (100 mg for 12 months) in treating common cold sore infection.
Overall, patients using valaciclovir (100 mg for 12 months) were significantly more likely to use the generic drug valaciclovir (25% versus 4%) than patients who had used the branded drug valaciclovir (10% versus 3%).
The researchers also found that the combination of valaciclovir and the generic drug valaciclovir had a statistically significant higher frequency of adverse events, such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, and renal impairment. This is similar to the results of a study by Johnson et al.
